Assaying & Hallmarking

About Singapore Assay Office (SAO)

Apart from Japan, Singapore is the only Asian country to have established a hallmarking system and an official national standard for precious metal fineness.

Since 1975, Singapore Test Service’s SAO is the one and only established and independent accredited assaying and hallmarking office in Singapore, providing professional testing services for precious metals such as gold and silver in the jewellery industry.

Under the SAO Hallmarking Scheme, manufacturers, traders, and retailers are encouraged to submit their gold jewellery for purity testing and certification. SAO adopts stringent testing processes such as XRF screening and fire assaying, in compliance with the Singapore Standard SS581:2012. Only jewellery pieces that meet SAO’s purity and fineness standards will qualify for hallmarking.

The full hallmark consists of the SAO lionhead mark, the Standard/Fineness mark and the Jeweller’s mark. With over 40 years of experience, SAO assures consumers, gold retailers, suppliers and traders of the quality of their precious metals.
